Feed-grade alkaline protease is sold in two forms. The liquid form is marketed for pig and poultry feed and for fermented feed, where it goes into the fermentation or the wet mix. The solid form is sold alongside it for dry premix and mash. Choose the form that fits your mixing line rather than the highest number on the label, and ask for the activity test method on the COA so you can compare offers fairly.
Where it fits: in fermented soybean meal and other fermented feed, the protease breaks down protein during fermentation, a process many producers use to make plant protein easier to digest. In pig and poultry diets it supports protein use from plant meals. In aquafeed, protein ingredients can be pre-treated before inclusion. Ordinary alkaline protease does not survive high-temperature extrusion or pelleting, so in those lines it is applied after the heat step or used on the ingredient before processing.

How does alkaline protease improve protein digestibility in animal feed?
Alkaline protease partially hydrolyses intact proteins in feed ingredients into shorter peptides and amino acids. This increases protein solubility, reduces the work required of the animal's own endogenous proteases, and can deactivate anti-nutritional factors like trypsin inhibitors in soy. The result is higher apparent digestibility of protein and amino acids, leading to better feed conversion ratio and growth performance in fish, shrimp, and poultry.

Can alkaline protease survive extrusion or pelleting?
Standard alkaline protease loses activity at extrusion temperatures. In extruded and high-temperature pelleted feed it is applied after the heat step, or used to pre-treat the protein ingredient. In mash, fermented feed and cold processes it can be added directly. Confirm activity after your own process.
